Mamba Mentality by Kobe Bryant

November 1, 2025 by Maeve Leave a Comment

Summary

Mamba Mentality is a 2018 autobiography by Kobe Bryant that offers insights into what it takes to become one of the most dedicated and accomplished athletes in sports history. The book takes the reader through the history of how a young, teenaged Kobe Bryant was drafted right out of high school into the National Basketball Association (NBA) by the Charlotte Hornets and was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He would then go on to become an international icon, both on and off the court. He inspired millions with his dedication to the game, his family and pouring into communities. Mamba Mentality gives a glimpse into the kind of mindset it takes to become such a formidable and accomplished athlete and push through to be one of the greatest athletes of all time.

What I Liked

Bryant details lessons he learned on and off the court on how to develop his craft and train his mind and body for the career he wanted to have. He was determined. It was evident in his reputation before I read the book. Then he laid out his training schedules and it was crystal clear that his workout regimen and commitment to his body and basketball were unmatched. His routines were impeccable. He didn’t allow himself to make excuses. He didn’t allow himself to lose sight of his goal.

I like that he paid homage to so many people that impacted his mentality and his game. From coaches and training staff, to former athletes, teammates and opponents, he gives flowers to anyone he learned from. It was refreshing to read.

What I Learned

Though he didn’t give much of a look into his private family life, he makes it known that he prioritized his time with his love ones and worked around his time with them. I’ll admit, that was one of my biggest questions when I was reading through his routines. I wondered how in the world he managed to be present with his family when he was so committed to multiple training and recovery sessions daily, not to mention the actual practices, games and travel. It was great to see how he was able to find a balance that worked for him. As a parent, it lessened any potential guilt I’d have about being more dedicated to my craft.

I learned that being disciplined is intentional. One doesn’t stumble upon greatness. In his words, “greatness isn’t for everyone” and I can see that. You have to make up your mind that you can do something and that you are going to commit to doing that something. No excuses. You cannot be lazy and maximize your potential. I was also reminded that greatness is all mental. Mind over matter is so much deeper when you think about building a mind that can overcome the limitations of the physical.

Reading Recommendation

I absolutely recommend this book for anyone who is looking for motivation or just wants a bit of inspiration. And, of course, if you’re a Kobe Bryant fan this is a great read to gain even more appreciation for him and his legacy.

Happy Reading!!!
